Educator Preparation and Development is Key Area II of the Texas Long-Range Plan for implementing technology into schools by the year 2020. Much progress has been made in Professional Development for BISD since the plan has gone into effect. I believe that most teachers in our district, as well as in the State of Texas can now at least have an idea of how to work their way around a computer. However, more progress must be made in the future if we are to implement these goals successfully for our students to be successful in today's world. The trend at Bastrop High School over the last three years appears to have declined significantly between the 05-06 and 06-07 school years, then bounce back just a bit in the 07-08 school year. This drop from 05-06 to 06-07 was felt in all six areas of the Bastrop High School Campus STaR Chart. Granted, the six areas did change between these two years of the chart, but these changes were not enough to explain dropping from an "Advanced Tech" score of 18, to a "Developing Tech" score of 10 in just one year. Our current STaR Chart shows this area increase a little from 10 in 06-07 to 11 in the 07-08 school year.
So what can be done about this to insure our students are recieving the best possible education? As Bastrop is currently implementing a plan to give all High School students their own laptop computer, our teachers and professionals need to be much better educated themselves on the many possible ways in which this technology can be a wonderful resource for teaching our students to become life-long learners.
